Anti Dog
How do you socialize a TOTALLY anti-social dog???
Ok so I have a 3 year old pomeranian and he’s really anti-social and skittish around other dogs and most people besides the people he sees often. We’re getting another dog and we just went to the shelter to check them out and we brought our pom. He completely freaked out and barked like crazy. We couldn’t get the dog we wanted because of our unfriendly dog. I don’t know what to do, please help!
I would say get your friends and family that have dogs, and start interacting with them. Don’t take him to a park yet, all the new dogs and new smell will freak him out unless you warm him up to it. so get a few people that you know that have dogs and go somewhere to meet up. slowly let the dogs interact, with minimal interference from you. don’t cuddle and tell him its ok. all that does in his eyes it say, “yeah you’re right, there is something to be afraid of.” dogs learn from us. so, if you show there is nothing to be afraid of, he will understand. also, don’t force him. let him become interested on his terms, not yours. bring treats. while you sit there chatting away with your friend, randomly throw him treats. he will then learn to associate new friends with treats, he will become more interested. after a bit he will become less timid, and he will go into dog mode, let him sniff, thats how they get to know each other, and thats when you give lots of treats and praise. once he is happy with this dog, move on to a new one! eventually you can move up to dog parks. just make sure you stay with him so he isnt bombarded with all the dogs coming to say hi. good luck!
