Electronic Shock

Are electronic collars (shock collars, e-collars, etc.) outlawed anywhere?

What if you wanted to poison proof your dog? Or teach him that snakes and porcupines aren’t prey? How would you go about teaching him these things without an e-collar?

I have yet to find someone who is able to answer these questions for me.

They ARE outlawed in some States in Australia And the only place you can buy them is in a State called Queensland.As for Councils lending them out l have never heard such rubbish in my life they are cruel and cause a dog extreme pain if set on t a high setting.No good trainer will use them but a poor one will and end up with a nervous neurotic dog.
The people who resort to these collars are trying a quick method to achieve a goal and l can see how difficult it is to prevent your dog from going after snakes or porcupines etc but it is in the nature of the dog to chase moving objects and if you have a dog completely controlled and off lead and l mean full Obedience trained one word and the dog will leave.
l have loads of snakes around although nowhere near the house as l have a containment ultra sound system in place but given the acreage l have and bush around we come across many many different forms of wild life and although my dogs are not hounds or gumdogs of course they will want to chase but they are Obedience trained and l use sometimes a whistle or one SHARP NO,,LEAVE.l must admit with the young pups it is harder but they are initially on long leads until l get them to the stage where l can trust them.We do have similar animals to your porcupine although much smaller and much more docile and cute so they really do not inflict the sharp barbs your porcupines may and of course in some of your States you have skunks and that is something l could not bear as the smell is indescribable.
To poison proof your dog again it requires a lot of training and not easy to do but if you enquire at your local Obedience Club they may be able to help.When you go through the classes of obedience and get towards the top and more difficult classes they have what is called scent discrimination and it is a good dog who can do this so you are able to reverse this to teach your dog never to accept food or drink from any stranger.l teach it to pups l keep from 12 weeks so when walking and someone stops to say what a lovely dog and tries to give them treat they are given a sharp NO plus l use the check chain which the links click to indicate NO WAY.
Quick example l had to do some shopping in the nearest town quite a distance from home and had two of the dogs with me and l tied them to the pole outside the Supermarket as everyone knows me and the dogs so the Cashiers always keep one eye on them plus they would not go with anyone.It was a warm day not hot and some kind person put a bowl of water down for the dogs which l thought was lovely and thoughtful.l happened to be watching them and saw them both looking at the water one of them was so tempted she kept looking at the sliding doors to see if l was watching,the other ignored the bowl.In the end neither drank from the bowl.l am sure it was water not poison but you never know.(Sorry just a quick story)
Have you tried the citronella collars they squrt that horrid smelling stuff,personally l have not so can give you no info but the way l have taught my dogs is through many many years of experience through doing Obedience.There is NO quick answer and l can assure you l have at times not being successful with a few who have gone after a rabbit which usually does not concern me as they will hardly harm the dog.As for snakes,90% of the time you will not see the snake l can assure you unless it is sunning itself in the open and than you have a problem.
l think your answer is basically using a flexi lead which has a retraction button and stop button and try that as it will take a lot of time and effort to train y our dogs to the point of not accepting bait or chasing critters.
Sorry l could not be more help but there is NO quick answer that l know of.
If you live in the Country unfortunately that is par for the course of living in that area the danger of wild animals and many many dogs have been killed by snakes in the main or some farmer who has used some illegal bait and a dog has picked it up.

ADDED NOTE:-l was reminded very rudely that the electronic collars are legal in a State in Australia called Tasmania which means they are legal in that State and Queensland but banned in most of the other States.Most people do not know how to use these collars that is the main reason l am so against them as l find in general use they should not be used BUT if there is an emergency where nothing else will suffice than as it has b een explained to me by one who knows how to use them it is not cruel.l will never use one no matter what the situation and that is my choice and l am entitled to it.l also train dogs and have never ever used one of these nor recommended one either to anyone.
