How do you teach a lazy/stubborn/unwilling dog to play?

Are you sure your dog is lazy, and not lethargic?
Lethargy in dogs can often be a symptom of a medical complaint, rather than laziness, and can require treatment.
If your dog was a rescue dog then he could have come from an environment where he wasn’t exposed to toys and games, in which case you will almost need to teach him how to play. Or it could simply be that play isn’t the most salient activity to your dog, and he finds other activities such as running in an open space, more rewarding.
