Do wee-wee pads work better than newspaper?
I am trying to potty train 2 puppies. If I bring them outside they go on command. But during the night or if I am away from home more than an hour I have them in an enclosed area covered with newspapers. The problem is that this area also includes their bedding and food. They were pretty good at going in one spot of the enclosure but last night I found poop in the blankets! I was wondering if putting wee- wee pads in on corner of their “room” will encourage them to go in one place! Help!
Pee Pee pads hamper and prolong housebreaking. Housebreaking should be black and white. Pottying is an OUTSIDE ONLY activity. Pottying is NEVER OK in the home.
The only exception/excuse for using peepee pads I can think of is that you live in a high-rise and outdoors area for your dog to potty in is not reasonably quickly and easily accessible.
Otherwise, use of pee-pee pads violates proper (and by ‘proper’ I mean ‘most effective’) housebreaking protocol not only for the reasons stated above – but also because it means you’re letting the dog roam the house freely, prior to being housebroken, not under your direct and immediate supervision where you can catch accidents before and as they happen. If you find the potty after the fact, the training opportunity is missed/wasted and negative training has happened (pup pottied in the house and didn’t get immediately corrected).
The most effective way to housebreak a puppy is to never let it get away with going potty in the house without immediate correction.
Never let it ‘learn’ that it can go potty in the house and as long as you don’t see it happen it’s OK.
If I am overlooking other perfectly good reasons why using peepee pads, despite their hindering of potty training, is a good idea – I apologize. But if you’re in a house/apt/trailer with easy access to outside, there’s no good reason I can think of.
