Is it necessary to spray a dog if he barks continuously?
Will it teach him to stop? If not, what are some good and effective ways to refrain the barking?

Rich Q how is spraying water on a dog messed up? Are you trying to call me messed up and try to make me seem like a Michael Vick? It’s not it’s burning acid i’m spraying at him, but the dog constantly barks and we do tell him no very firmly but too no good result..
dude…its WATER whats so unhumane of spraying water at him? Your making it seem like im spraying acid at him or something, it’s just pure plain water! how is that unhumane? Its not like im taking a baseball bat to him or something…
The squirt bottle could work, depending on how you’re using it and why your dog is barking.
If your dog is barking at you for attention, it will not work. Because the desired response to his barking would be any acknowledgment from you, even spraying him accomplishes his goal, thereby rewarding the barking. Ignoring the barking and then highly rewarding sitting quietly by petting and treats will work best.
If your dog is barking at outside distractions, using the squirt bottle (make sure he doesn’t see you with the bottle) could distract him from what he’s barking at long enough to stop the barking for a second. This would hopefully give you an opportunity to give a “shush” cue while he’s quiet. Start feeding him a handful of treats one at a time while he’s quiet, every now and then reinforcing the word cue until whatever he was barking at is gone. An empty soda can with a few coins in it and covered with masking tape will also work as a noise distraction in place of the squirt bottle. Again the key is that he not see you with those items. Dogs are smart and if he knows you are controlling the shaking he’ll only be quiet while you’re around.
Also, shouting at the dog to “shut up” or “quiet” while the dog is barking will only reinforce the barking as the dog (not understanding English) only hears a loud, sharp noise that to him resembles barking. He will think you’re joining in and that he’s right in barking at whatever it is he’s barking at. Good luck.
